Paul’s Ride

Excerpts from LDR member Paul Brand:

I am back from my adventure. I rode from Idaho to North Dakota to see my aunt on her 90th birthday and to see if I am as much of a motorcycle rider as I think I am.

I left a little after 5 am on Thursday May 21. I had been checking the weather forecast and it was looking like I could have some cold air to ride through for the first part of the trip. There was a hard frost outside. I wanted to make the trip on my 2007 Harley XL883 Sportster – stock except for a Sundowner seat and mid-height sissy bar and rear shelf.

Rode to town. Found a gas station where the attendant would sign as a witness. Gassed up and went inside for the paperwork. So far, so good.

Then I hit the road. Went up over 4th of July pass and the temperature kept dropping. The air was in the 20’s. Kept moving my fingers to try to keep the blood flowing. I pressed on with determination to make it to Wallace, only 48 miles or so from the start. Up on the hill to Montana, it was still very cold. Kept finding rest areas with hand blow dryers to warm up my fingers. Back on the road to Missoula. The air was warmer, and hit road construction on the way. Lots of wind. Further on, made it to Butte. Things were feeling better now. Gassed up and headed for the Continental Divide. Bike purred right up the grade. Everything working good.

Then stopped at Wheat Montana for lunch and gas. Lots more wind. By the time I rode to Billings, the sun was shining but moderately cool. Pushed on to Glendive. At this rate, I felt I would make it to North Dakota before dark. Crossed into North Dakota and about 20 miles west of Dickinson it started to rain. Road construction made it slow but slower is better in the rain.

I get through the road construction and crossed the Missouri River. Last leg up to Minot. First 40 miles are relatively quiet then the rain begins to pick up. The full-face helmet is working good and the gauntlet gloves are doing their part too. Slow and steady gets me there safe.

I’m wondering who will be open at 2:00 am to witness the end of the ride. I headed to the truck stop where I asked the attendant to sign for me. We do the paperwork and I head over to my mom’s house to find a spot to sleep. It is just past midnight Pacific, so I don’t feel overly exhausted. It has been a good ride.

Luke Baglee 1000 Mile Charity Ride

I was approached by my long time friend who had just lost his son to Haemochromatosis. “I’m thinking of doing some sort of motor bike ride in Luke’s memory, would you be interested in taking part ”

Twenty words was all it took for me to become involved in an event that exceeded my expectations, raised thousands of pounds for a little known charity and left everyone involved with an immense sense of achievement and a hunger to do it all again.

Are we surprised by how well it went Well, yes and no. Yes, as we are staggered at the figure we collected already and the potential final figure and the fact that so many completed the ride successfully. No, because we know that the biking community, no matter what machine they ride, always seem to be happy to support a good cause no matter what size it is.

Update, In November 2008, £14,500 were handed over to The Haemochromatosis Society.

Long Distance Riders First Anniversary

LDR Members,

October marks the first anniversary of Long Distance Riders and it has been a great year! One of the highlights of my year was my ride Coast to Coast with two of my friends, Mike Scott and Red Barnes. It was a ride I won’t soon forget.

Another great ride was when a fellow rider from Texas, Eddie McWhorter, who has since become a friend as well as an LDR member, asked Long Distance Riders to certify his charity ride for Make a Wish Foundation. I rode to Texas to take part in the event and was glad to meet many new friends from Texas. Everyone was very hospitable and all really enjoyed the 1000-mile charity ride through Texas and New Mexico.

I very much enjoyed looking over your documentation and was envious of the great rides that LDR members have taken from all over the world. Some of the rides were fantastic through some very scenic places that I hope to ride and visit someday soon.

Some of the rides certified this year were in the United Kingdom where I was lucky enough to have traveled, and I was eager to trace these routes to learn more about this area of the world. Our LDR riders from Lithuania showed a passion for the road as many of them took several rides for certification this year. If you haven’t had a chance, take a moment to look at the pictures on the web site news page from some of these rides.

Thanks to all the members who I have emailed and talked to during the year. I value your friendship, some of you I have never met but feel as though I know you and hope someday to meet. One trip I will definitely make next year is to see Blane Piper and the Fredericksburg riders and plan to stop by Big Daddy Leather for Bike Night. I would also like to thank the Tallahassee members, for their support and friendships that have grown through the many miles and many laughs of our motorcycle trips.

Thank you all for making this inaugural year a great one for Long Distance Riders. Thank you too for your friendships as I feel I have known you all through your rides and your kind words.

We look forward to hitting the road as time and weather permits, and to making this a memorable and eventful second year for LDR. So far, our plans are to sponsor a Make a Wish Foundation 500 mile Charity Ride in Florida, sometime in the fall of 2009, with future plans of making this an annual event. In 2010 we look to expand this event to other surrounding states such as Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee. Our Texas connection (Eddie McWhorter) plans on adding New Mexico to their state charity event in 2009 and we will give you more information as it becomes available. If anyone is interested in having a 500-mile charity ride in your area, we would love to help in any way we can. We will continue to offer our current four rides (Easy Rider 500, Full Throttle 1000, King of the Road 1500, and Born to be Wild Coast to Coast) for certification and may add another as the year progresses.

As always, if you have any ideas for rides, any pictures from your ride you want to share, or any suggestions for the web site, please email me with your thoughts. Thanks again to each one of you for your loyal support and your friendships. I consider you all my “charter members” for our first year, October 2007 to October 2008, as Long Distance Riders.

As always…
Ride safe,

Jack
